This week’s Bike of the Week is Diego's ultra-sleek BMC Teammachine R. Diego is somewhat of a newcomer to the area. He arrived from Miami a few years back, where he had started his riding journey.

In Miami, Diego got accustomed to an aero frame with aero wheels. He loved the aerodynamic performance and really enjoyed the quick acceleration and the speed on downhills and flat sections with a deep-section wheelset. However, after moving into an area like Greenwich with its rolling hills, he discovered firsthand that there can be a weight penalty with aerodynamics. Deep tubes and rims are fast, but they’re not always light.

So, for his new bike, Diego wanted a machine that could remain aero and stylish while keeping the weight down and, most importantly, keeping the ride well balanced.

After some consideration and evaluation of various options, we concluded the BMC Teammachine R 01 had all the qualities Diego was looking for. The frame was optimized by the Formula 1 Red Bull Advanced Technologies team and is one of the most aerodynamic on the market. The partnership between the premium Swiss brand and Red Bull allowed BMC to develop a bike that would remain fast and stable, especially in very windy conditions – exactly what Diego wanted. As tested by Abraham on his trip to San Francisco, the Teammachine R 01 is sitting at the top of the food chain for high-performance bikes.

Diego’s bike, in this high-end build, weighs 16.5lb without pedals. This is especially impressive since, along with the selection of the aero frame, Diego also wanted to optimize with a deep-section wheelset. He previously used wheels with a 60mm rim, but we investigated something that would handle a little more predictably. We ended up going with the Tour de France-winning ENVE 4.5 SES, as used by Tadej Pogačar, and there’s no better endorsement than that. With their sub-1,500g weight, these awesome wheels were the perfect complement for the project, allowing Diego to crush the climbs and also benefit during descents and sprints.

Equipped with the latest Shimano Dura-Ace R9270 wireless group with the CeramicSpeed upgrade kit (OSPW pulleys, bearings, and chain), Diego's bike has nothing but the best components for success. We can't wait to see what Diego can accomplish with this beautiful BMC and take his cycling game to the next level.
